Our second excursion for the year was a three-day hiking trip up in
the mountains. It is rather quiet being above the tree line since
there are no birds or anything, just the sound of some flies buzzing
and the wind. The only animals we saw were a herd of reindeer off in
the distance on the second day. It is also easy to lose perspective
and misjudge distances since there aren't any trees or other objects
to use as reference points. We overnighted in cabins set up by a
hiking association. The conditions would be considered
"primitive" by most Americans - gas stoves to cook on, wood
stove for heating, outhouses, the only running water is to be found in
the nearest brook. But I found it to be more relaxing than a
activities-filled vacation at some resort. Give me the mountains any
day.
