| July Luncheon Meeting
The July 8 luncheon meeting will be held at Harris Bank Marengo. Guest Speakers, Wayne and David Wickboldt of Harmony Computer will debut the Chamber Website and review the advertising opportunities available to member companies. Plan on arriving at 12:00 noon. A picnic lunch of subs, taco salad and other refreshing side dishes will be catered by Wisteds Certified Supermarket. The cost is $7.50. Since we anticipate a larger crowd than normal, please R.S.V.P. so we may best accommodate our members. We urge you to attend this very informative meeting. Membership DriveMembership currently stands at 208, up from 198 last year at this time. This month we welcome Jim and Steve Zei of Zei Decorating who specialize in paper hanging and fine painting including faux finishing. The chamber thanks you for your confidence in our organization. Your help with our membership effort is always welcome. We encourage you to invite someone to a mixer or luncheon so they too may take advantage of these excellent networking opportunities. On Golf Playday.... 144 chamber members and friends enjoyed a warm sunny day of golf at Marengo Ridge Golf Club during our 28th Annual Golf Playday on June 24. Blind Bogie Winner (84) was Dan Grant winning $256. 181 guests were present for a delicious dinner at Oak Steakhouse at Shady Lane. The lucky winners of the 50/50 Raffle were: Chris DeBoer, Tim Emerson, Jeff Lauritzen,Sandy Butenschoen and Carole Bartman - $200 each; and the $4,000 cash prize was split by Wally Butenschoen/Jimmy Rasmussen, and Frank Oakley. Sandy Carmichael was the $488 winner of the mini 50/50 raffle. Each guest selected a door prize and the big winners were: first ticket drawn - John Smith, Golf Foursome at Marengo Ridge Golf Club,and last ticket drawn - Sue Hartman, Gas Grill co-sponsored by Lindows Appliances. Members in the News The 2nd Annual "Stars & Stripes" Street Dance benefitting Settlers Days will be held Saturday, July 11 from 8pm to Midnight. Joes Place will sell hot dogs, and drinks will be supplied by the Spot Tavern. Favorite dance tunes will be supplied by Steve Summers of Q98.5 radio in Rockford. There will be a nominal admission charge and the purchase of tickets will be required for food & drinks. Rain Location: Marengo Fire Protection District. On May 31, 1998, Midwest Banc Holdings, Inc. parent company of Midwest Bank of McHenry County achieved $1 Billion in total assets. "While a billion dollars has a nice ring to it, we are even more proud that we have kept and served our customers for many years, and are now serving our customers sons and daughters." John L. Freund, Marengo-Union Funeral Home has been reelected regional director of the Illinois Funeral Directors Association. Currently celebrating its 118th year, the association has 1,100 members and represents the funeral homes in every county of the State. The McHenry County Economic Development Corporation will publish a comprehensive directory of employee and training resources this fall. The directory will include information on potential sources of labor, recruitment techniques and available employee training programs to help McHenry County employers recruit the workers they need. For more info contact the MCEDC at (815) 363-0444. The City of Marengo recently appointed Robert Kolberg as the new alderman of Ward 3. Kolberg, a lifelong Marengoan resides with his wife, Joan and two sons, Rob, 18 and Tom, 16. Dennis Mennemeier has recently joined Sun Publications, the weekly group of Copley Chicago Newspapers, as sales manager for three weekly newspapers in McHenry County as well as the shopper publication, the Marengo Merchant. Dana Corp. parent company of Warner Electric Division of Marengo plans to purchase Echlin Inc., the parent company of McHenry-based Brake Parts, Inc. Engineered Polymer Solutions has coordinated its 98 Paint-A-Thon. Home selection has been determined with the assistance of committee member June Meyer. A crew of volunteer workers will complete the painting during the month of July. The chamber applauds this community effort spearheaded by Catholic Charities. Bank Block Antiques, one of the areas new antique malls has recently opened in Marengo. The store features a number of dealers who specialize in antique knickknacks, baseball cards and handmade crafts. "I wanted to appeal to a broad range of people," owner Sharon Barth said. Business After Hours Mixers Nearly 50 members and guests attended the June mixer hosted by Jim and Sandy Carmichael. Guests were treated to hot and cold appetizers and beverages of their choice while enjoying the warm summer evening in a delightful Southwestern ambience. Luann Kanaly of Marengo Travel was the winner of a beautiful potted plant. The chamber thanks Jim and Sandy Carmichael for their generous hospitality and continued support of chamber sponsored events. The July 28 mixer will be hosted by McHenry County College from 5:00 - 7:00 pm. Sidewalk Sales Mark your calendars for July 24 &25 when Sidewalk Sales return to Marengo. Times are Friday 8:00am to 8:00pm and Saturday 8:00am to 5:00pm. Join us in town for food, fun and bargains galore! See insert.Settlers Day Parade The 28th Annual Settlers Day Parade will take place on October 11. Applications have been mailed to past parade entries and are available at the chamber office. Parade line-up is on a first-come, first-served basis by receipt of application, so mail yours early to secure the best possible position. BizNet 98 Registration is being accepted for BizNet 98, McHenry Countys only business to business expo which will be held on Oct. 20 from 3:00-7:00 pm at McHenry County College. Booth costs are $150 for members of McHenry County chambers and $400 for non-members. This year BizNet will share its profits with co-sponsoring chambers, awarding the most money to the chamber with the highest percentage of its members buying a booth. See insert for further info. Expo Marengo 99 Businesses planning to exhibit at the 99 Expo Marengo scheduled to take place on February 13 & 14 should complete an application and return it to the chamber in order to take advantage of the Early Bird Discount. To qualify, you must respond by August 1 with a 50% deposit. Thereafter, the cost will increase by $50 per booth. (Call the chamber for an application.) Historic Homes Ornaments The 1998 Historic Homes Ornament can be purchased at P & R Behm Variety Framing & Crafts, Chriss Hallmark, Brandts Pharmacy and the Chamber Office. This years issue features the Orson Rogers Home on East Grant Highway on a red glass globe. The early bird cost is $6.50 until August 1. Thereafter, the cost will be $7.50. SPECIAL this year, weve packaged a limited number of complete sets of all 5 historic homes ornaments for a cost of $25 per set. Note: Sets cannot be broken. Gift Certificates The Marengo SnoGoers recently purchased $740 in gift certificates to be given to area property owners who were unable to attend a dinner in their honor. Nearly $6,000 in gift certificates have been sold to date this year, almost double last years sales. Stop by the chamber to purchase Marengo-Union Chamber of Commerce Gift Certificates. They make great gifts, and can be redeemed at nearly 90 Marengo/Union businesses listed on the front & back inside covers. WMCW Radio The chamber has Community Service radio time every other Thursday morning. Broadcasts take place over the phone at First Chicago. To take advantage of advertising your business at no charge, call Alice Cassiano 568-3170. Annual Presidents Dinner You wont want to miss this event! Our 28th Annual Presidents Dinner will be held at Donleys Village Hall & Banquets on October 3. Cocktails 6:00pm and Dinner 7:00pm. Menu choices are: 8 oz. Filet or Stuffed Boneless Breast of Chicken Margaret. This years theme will be Salute to Industry. The Dinner Committee is presently working on final details. Additional information will be available in the August newsletter. Plan on attending so we may together share in honoring outgoing and incoming officers and directors as well as the industries that support our efforts throughout the year. Triumph of the Human Spirit Award Sponsored by Centegra Rehabilitation Network & McHenry County Chambers, awards will be presented to persons in the following categories: 1) a non-profit organization that has taken a lead in fostering improved opportunities for the disabled in McHenry County; 2.) a business that has creatively responded to people with disabilities; and 3.) an individual who has overcome disabilities.
