SPARTA, MI

Sparta MI Depot, March 1998

The Sparta depot was built by the Toledo, Saginaw and Muskegon Railway in 1888 along its line from Ashley to Muskegon. In 1928 the line became part of the Grand Trunk Railroad. Eventually the line was abandoned. Tracks in front of the depot remained "live" through a connection with PM/Chessie/CSX tracks just east of the depot. In time, CSX removed its switch and the tracks leading to the depot.

The West Michigan Railway Historical Society acquired the depot in 1973 and restored it for a meetings room and museum. The Society also has an Ann Arbor RR caboose, a C&O caboose, and freight cars on property, all nicely restored.
