HOPKINS, MI

Hopkins, MI; February 2000

Hopkins is about 25 miles south of Grand Rapids, on an old Michigan Southern line, now abandoned, that ran from Kalamazoo to Grand Rapids. It was built in 1869, as the Michigan Southern was building branches to feed more traffic to its Detroit-Chicago main line.

By 1874 the New York Central had taken over the Michigan Southern. In 1968 the New York Central and Pennsvlvania Railroads merged to form Penn-Central. The railroad now had three lines into Grand Rapids from the south. That was two too many, so the line through Hopkins was abandoned in the early 1970's.
