Nothing really new to report on the Ranger since last year. It sat most of the summer while I
enjoyed the GSX, although I used it to tow the jetski to various lakes on the weekends. I've got
about half of the 3 years lease left and I'm plenty under mileage, so I haven't decided yet if I'm
going to keep or return the truck.

It's been awhile since I've done anything with the truck, including even driving it. It's been sitting
all summer while I drove and raced the Eclipse, but as of yesterday the GSX is in storage for the
winter, and the Ranger will be my only vehicle until next spring.
I had a remote starter installed on the truck yesterday by Audio Specialities in Cary, IL. With the
use of the new Ford transponder key I didn't even bother attempting the install myself. Now I'm ready
for winter, and eagerly awaiting springtime when I get the car back on the street and get back to
modding it some more.

Well, I finally got my tailgate back from the body shop. The dent is completely gone, I couldn't
even find exactly where it used to be. The outside panel of the tailgate was resprayed, and baked.
The color is just slighty darker than the yellow on the rest of the truck, but you don't notice it
unless you are looking for it. I guess I won't be taking off the 4x4 sticker on the tailgate either,
as it is under the clearcoat.

I got some use out of the tow package on the trip to and back from Galena, IL. On the way
there I towed a friend's quad trailer with 2 Polaris 4-wheelers straped on. After that trip
I'm glad I got the 4.0L engine, as even it was struggling to accelerate at speeds fo 60+.
On the way back I pulled a much smaller trailer with a little Yamaha 250 dirt bike on it, and
I hardly noticed it at all. Unfortunately, when disconnecting the quad trailer, it popped up a bit and put a small dent and scratch in the center of the tailgate. Luckily I wasn't responsible, so I simply pulled off the tailgate and handed to a friend who is getting the dent pulled and the panel resprayed. |

Of the very few modifications that I plan on making to the Ranger, adding a leather tonneau
bed cover was one of them. (Before winter a remote starter is going to be installed.) I
picked up an Extang Black Max
tonneau cover for about $200. It installed in about 15 minutes with no extra tools needed.
(It comes with an allen wrench.) That should help keep the bed clean and keep gear dry.

After a week of driving my new truck, I'm liking it more and more each day! The extended cab
doors are so handy; just flip them open and you can get in and out of the back easily, not
to mention load and unload groceries, gear, and other stuff without moving the seats.

Since I could get a great deal on any Ford, I started to look for a replacement for my ageing
winter vehicle, a 1990 2WD Ford Ranger. My original idea was to pick up a gas and pocketbook
friendly Focus for under 15K and throw some snow tires on it come November, but after being
disappointed in my local dealer's selection of Focuses (Foci?) I turned my attention to the
Rangers again. That's when my eye caught a lone, bright yellow truck sitting amongst all the
drab greens, grays, and blacks. After a little reading it turns out I was staring at a 2001
Chrome Yellow Ranger Edge 4WD Supercab, with an optional 4.0L V6 with all the options.
After spending a week or so researching the truck and trying to talk myself out of getting
into another 5 year or longer loan (the GSX is now paid off!), I looked into Ford's Red Carpet
lease program. After all the rebates and other employee discounts I ended up with a monthly
lease payment that I simply could not turn down. And since I'll be driving the Eclipse
most of the summer, I should have no problem staying under the allotted milage. |
