The Driftless Area

This is a selection of images I've taken while visiting my folk's place in southwest Wisconsin, located in the Driftless Area- a unique region that has never been glaciated, at least for the past several million years! The Driftless Area encompasses parts of southwest Wisconsin, northeast Iowa, southeast Minnesota, and northwest Illinois. All these photos were taken on, or adjacent to my mom and dad's retirement place- a small house and 180 acres of prairie, forest, and wetland.

Click here to see a panoramic image of 'Alvie's side'- my folk's land on the other side of the creek from their house...

Down in the valley; a small spring fed creek and wetlands run though here...

A magnificent rock shelter; I could tell you where it is, but then I'd have to kill you(just joking!)- this is an archaeologically significant site that has yet to be excavated... an archaeologist acquaintance has me 'keeping an eye on it'- the owners have some hare-brained ideas about excavating it themselves!

A photo taken by candlelight; this is a nice little sandstone cave just across the road from my folk's place. It is a single room that is 32 feet tall, with a small(9") aperture in the ceiling- quite beautiful. This 'ice phallus' is one of several that form during the winter months.

A fortuitous shot- my little chickadee...

Hummingbirds are abundant...

And the titmice pose nicely while eating...
