The Tangential CT system is a totally new generation of volume CT scanner system. Like conventional CT systems, it also uses a linear array of solid state detectors. In the conventional systems, the detector array is always perpendicular to the axis of rotation while it is parallel in Tangential system.
In a conventional CT system all detectors collect data for each CT slice. Also, the data is collected for one CT slice at a time. Thus for volume scan, many individual scans must be carried out. In Tangential system, only one detector collects all the data for an individual CT slice; and different detectors simultaneously collect data for different slices; thus covering the entire volume in a single scan.
In a conventional system, lot of detector data is collected through air so that each detector can collect all rays through the entire object; this wastes scan time and file space. In Tangential system, no data is collected outside the object. Only the data useful for reconstruction is collected.
In conventional scanners, several traverses are required to collect data for 180 or 360 degree views. Each traverse means start and stop of linear motion and wasted time. In Tangential system, single continuous motion collects the entire data set for all slices. All these factors lead to about 4 fold time savings.
