Whether one traces his Americanism back
three centuries to the Mayflower or three
years to the steerage is not half so important
as whether his Americanism of Today is real
and genuine. No matter by what various crafts
we came here we are all in the same boat now.

August 19, 1963

Dear Mother Paxson ... ...
Looking back through the years
Tell me -- What is it you see?
Would it be the days that were streaked with tears ...
Or the joys that you knew through your fine family?

(And while you go back through your memories
For plums of reminiscence lingering there
I'll tell you my memory of JOY
That could not be repeated any time, anywhere:
Those late Christmas Eves when we visited you
After Swedish Christmas Eve at my folks' ...
Before we were married ... and later, with
our boys ...
Ah, the excitement, the laughter, the jokes!)

You had Harry ... and Olly ... and Bobby ... and Chuck
Gordy ... Boots ... Connie ... Ginny ... Lee ...
And then, in 1930, you added Jean Alice
As the star to top off the family tree!
You have all the rich memories of their growing-up days
And this you can treasure -- deep in your heart
It's reason for justifiable pride:
Of all your ten kids, not one had a part
In crime or wrongdoing, or had evil to hide ..
They've been industrious ... intelligent ...
some brilliant ... all good ...
And they've brought you no stigma nor shame
For you taught them well, as a good mother should,
To be proud and to honor the good Paxson name
Some times the present isn't easy to bear
For you have pain and discomfort, I know
But you have FAMILY -- those who do care
If you're sad or you're happy -- If you stay or go
True, five of your sons went off to war
And I know how your heart must have yearned
For not many mothers could offer more
But when it was over, all five returned
Now there's no person on earth or in space --
Or even in Heaven above
Who could exactly fill dear Connie's place
In your life - for she serves you with
true filial love ...
So count all these blessings and, all things considered,
Though financially you may not be healthy
I'm sure you'll agree that in blessings earned
You're one who is truly quite wealthy!

Family History

The Paxson family of Bucks County, Pa. Descended from James and Jane Paxton from the Parrish of "Marsh Gibbon", County of Buck, Old England. They came to Pennsylvania in 1682 on the ship Amity out of London.

They married in England; wife Jane died in 1710. James died in 1722 leaving Sarah, William, and Henry. My line is the descendent of WILLIAM.

James was a successful farmer. James and Jane adhered to the Quaker faith, and produced a certificate from the Friends Colehill Meeting to the Buckingham Meeting in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

There was a first marriage in England, perhaps to a Mary.

The Paxson's were, in England, Paxton's. This name originates in Scotland, from the Tweedside District (The Borders) and, undoubtedly, our roots can be traced back to that district. Although I have not discovered a "Paxton" Tartan as of yet, I have found the Tweedside District Tartan, and, according to my research, it would be more likely for Paxtons to have worn the district tartan anyway. Click on the button to see the full Tweedside District Tartan.

Sometime after marriage they removed to St. George Hundred, New Castle Co., DE, where Mr. Paxson died in the fifth month, 1719. Family History

George Washington Paxson was born in Columbia, PA May 15th, 1853 on a farm to Quaker parents. He was sent to the Wyoming Seminary in Kingston, PA to study for the ministry, but was too blithe, and a poor student, so they sent him home. Afterward, he went to work on the Pennsylvania Railroad and stayed with them for fifty years.

He ran the Wilkes Barre Express, the longest run on the division, and had an honor record. After several wrecks (none his fault) he left the Wilkes Barre Express and did special work at the Broad Street Station in Philadelphia, where he retired. At the age of 72 he died at home in Philadelphia.
