The JEPF was founded as a vehicle for handling private donations to benefit Johnsburg Community School District No. 12, McHenry County, Illinois. Administration of the JEPF is under the control of an independent board of directors.

Proceeds from The Spel-Lang Tree have:
Enabled four Johnsburg Schools faculty members to attend
an annual convention of The International Reading Association.
• Orlando, Florida, 1998 (2 faculty members)
• San Diego, California, 1999 (1 teacher)
• Indianapolis, Indiana, 2000 (1 teacher)
Enabled one faculty member to attend the national convention of the International Dyslexia Association in Chicago, 1999
Established an annual English/Communications scholarship
for a graduating high school senior beginning in the spring of 2002. Scholarships
were awarded in:
