Separate children so that
each works independently. Give each a sheet of ruled paper, folded in four vertical
sections. Dictate the following words, making sure that each child places words
in the proper grids (working across the page):

| box | You may keep your toys in a box. |
| dusk | Dusk is the time of day just after sunset. |
| gift | You can take a gift to a sick friend. |
| bond | This glue will bond the two pieces of wood together. |

| camp | There are many tents at the camp. |
| quilt | A quilt is a bedcover made from many different pieces of fabric. |
| hump | A camel has at least one hump, sometimes two. |
| junk | We sometimes call unnecessary things junk. |
| belt | Your belt will help you keep your pants or skirt in place. |
| yelp | I heard the dog yelp. |
| raft | The log raft floated down the river. |
| vent | A vent is an opening through which air can pass such as a vent on a clothes dryer. |
| bulk | Bulk means a large amount. You can buy peanuts in bulk rather than in packages. |
| lost | I lost my game so I could not play. |
| hand | Your hand is a part of your body. |
| vex | Vex means to make angry. Don't vex me! |
| Jim | Jim is my friend. |
| quick | Jack be nimble; Jack be quick! |
| Bob | Bob is a nickname for Robert. |
| Deb | Deb is a nickname for Debra or Deborah. |
| Nan | I have a friend named Nan. |
Make a copy of the Portfolio Record Sheet for each child. Collect children's papers and assess according to portfolio record. Staple assessment record to child's paper and insert into portfolio.
