Separate children so that
each works independently. Give each a sheet of ruled paper, folded in four vertical
sections. Dictate the following words, making sure that each child places words
in the proper grids (working across the page):

| yen | Yen means to want something. I have a yen for chocolate candy. |
| Tess | Tess is a nickname for Theresa. |
| fuzz | Short soft hair is called fuzz. |
| web | The spider spun a web. |
| off | The girl jumped off the diving board. |
| will | We will learn to write and spell. |
| hut | A little house made from mud or straw is called a hut. |
| job | In order to do a good job, we must print carefully. |
| gum | Please do not chew gum in class. |
| sax | The word sax is a short way of saying saxophone. |
| rib | Touch your rib. |
| Ned | My father has a friend named Ned. |
| six | I have six apples. |
Make a copy of the Portfolio Record Sheet for each child. Collect children's papers and assess according to portfolio record. Staple assessment record to child's paper and insert into portfolio.
