Separate children so that
each works independently. Give each a sheet of ruled paper, folded in four vertical
sections. Dictate the following words, making sure that each child places words
in the proper grids (working across the page):

| dip | You can dip your finger into the water. |
| Max | I have a friend named Max. |
| kick | A soccer player must be able to kick the ball. |

| had | I had two pennies yesterday. |
| pill | If you are ill, a pill may help you to get well. |
| bag | You can carry groceries in a bag. |
| quill | Years ago people wrote with quill pens. |
| jab | If you are not careful, you will jab yourself with your pencil. |
| kiss | Did you kiss someone goodbye before you came to school this morning? |
| bad | Smoke filled air is bad for our health. |
| quick | Jack be nimble; Jack be quick! |
| Sam | Sam is a nickname for Samuel or Samantha. |
| fix | Tom can fix the broken toy. |
| rack | A rack is used in a store to hold clothes. |
| nip | A nip is a little bite. |
| tin | Tin is a kind of metal. |
| Nat | Nat is a nickname for Nathan. |
| mass | Mass can mean a large amount. For example, a tornado can cause mass destruction. |
| yip | I heard the puppy yip. |
| ham | We can make ham sandwiches. |
Make a copy of the Portfolio Record Sheet for each child. Collect children's papers and assess according to portfolio record. Staple assessment record to child's paper and insert into portfolio.
