New McHenry location (moved to McHenry in Jul '05)

 Oct 23rd, 2006.
Cement was just poured (3x3x5.5ft hole) and the template is in place for the Tower base bolts. Just waiting for the Wilson TT-45 tubular tower raising fixture to be attached next spring.

March 18th, 2007
Installed a slightly used (35 year old) Wilson TT-45 tower on RBRF base . Old tower lowering winch seems to be in good shape. Removed old worm gear raising winch and will install new worm gear winch as soon as I can cut the old steel cable that is attached to this winch. Will start taking apart the old multi-band V/UHF quad and will install new 6m elements on it this week. Hopefully next weekend it will be warm enough so I can install the TailTwister II under the tower, take down the GP-6 from the tripod mounted on the deck and transfer it to the tower. In the mean time I search for a 15' aluminum mast. I am hoping to have the SteppIR re-installed by mid April if not sooner. Stay tuned!

View of west end of driveway

March 19 2007- Ordered a 2" X 15' Alum mast (Universal Tower) from AES in Milwaukee. Hopefully it will be here in a week or so.
March 25th 2007 - It was too nice to work on any outside projects so I went for ride on my RKC (High of 78 deg!). I'll try to mount the rotor this week after work.
March 29th 2007 - Have acquired a 12' x 2" x .250 mast and a 12' x 2" x .125 mast and clamp from Penninger Radio in St. Charles IL.

April 15th 2007 - It was such a nice day I decided to work on the tower. Contacted Jeff W9FMB on 2m and said he would come down from WI and give me a hand. I lowered the tower over the driveway and headed to Home Depot on my Harley to pick up some hardware so I can mount the new worm gear winch. Jeff was in the driveway when I got back and we took down the antennas on the deck and installed the new mast (24' long with 3 foot inside the tower) on the tower and put the 2 antennas on the mast and cranked the tower back up in vertical position. The GP-6 is now at 54' when the tower is in the nested position and the 160/80/40 dipole(Alpha-Delta DX-LB) is mounted on a slip ring about 18" above the top of the tower. More work to come!

Saturday April 21st Very nice day. Attached the 70cm/2m/6m horizontal loops, remote antenna switches(2m/70cm) and pre-amp(AG-35). I am missing the mast clamp for the 2m pre-amp so will have to wait till next week to install it on the mast.

View of the tower in the maintenance position. The rod hanging down gets connected to the rotator like a mast would be. The TailTwister II has not been installed yet.

End view of the 24' mast showing placement of loops.

Sunday May 20th     The start of the quad (Cubex Scorpion-88) re-build to add 4, 6m elements turning it into

a Cubex King Bee III (4 el on 6, 8 el on 2, 8 el on 70c).

Start by taking off all of the 2m and 70c elements and fiberglass spreaders. Open big box on table and remove new 6m elements and new boom drilled for new 6m spreaders. Put old 2m and 70c spreaders and loops back on and insert new 6m spreaders and superglue them to boom.

Monday May 21st    Threaded new 6m wire thru the new 6m spreaders and crimp joiners and then soldered wire ends to crimped joiners.

Looking down the business end of the new tri-band quad. Need to bolt to mast and attach 6 m feed line. Will attach feed lines to respective remote antenna switches this (Memorial Day) weekend. That is if the Belden 9913 coax arrives by Friday afternoon....Stay tuned.....

Tuesday May 23rd     Soldered up the "Quick Disconnect" to the T2X rotator. It's made from 2 sets (4 conductor ea.) of trailer connector kits which have weather proof boots built in.

Saturday May 26th    It rained off an on most of the day so I could not get any outside work done but I did go to Home Depot to pick up 2 10ft lengths of 1" PVC pipe to make the spacers for the 10 and 20m elements on the low band dipole. When completed it will in effect make the DX-LB dipole a DX-LB Plus.

Sunday May 27th    Tuned the 6m driven element (as best as I could) It resonates low at about 49.8 mhz but at 50.0-50.4 it was under 2.5:1 SWR according to my MFJ-269 Antenna Analyzer (so the built-in antenna tuner in the 756PROII should cover it) and soldered the 6m driven element to it's terminal lugs and also made the coax jumper between the quad and the Ameritron RCS-8V antenna switch. Also tuned the 432 loop and the 144 loop and ran coaxial (9913) patch cords between the loops and switches, and switches to the pre-amps (2m and 70c) and reconnected the main runs of LMR-400 coax to the common on the preamps. All control lines have been connected (but not run to the shack). I need to make 1 more patch cord to go between the 2m pre-amp and the 2m switch. I may have to move the quad under the 6m loop as the mast is now getting heavier. Monday's agenda includes making the final patch cord and hooking it up, cutting and drilling the PVC spacers for the dipole, bundling the coax and control lines together so as to make a 20 ft extension when the tower is cranked up to max elevation and then routing the coax and control lines into the garage and up through the ceiling of the garage into the shack above. Also have to build a switch box to control the the 2 AS-403 antenna switches. Next week, re-assembling the SteppIR!

Here is the modified Alpha/Delta DX-LB made into a DX-LB Plus with the addition of the 20 and 10m dipole wires. 1 inch PVC pipe is used for spacers. Looks like I need to elevate the ends some more so the 10/20 meter wires don't cross each other at the feed point. I need to modify the rotator shelf as the Tailtwister II does not seat correctly underneath the tower mast. It mounts off to one side so the mounting shelf will need to be modified so the rotator has some wiggle room underneath the tower mast.

Saturday June 2nd    I did bundle the coax and control lines together and run it over to the gutter for support. I left about 10ft extra in case I want to crank up the tower another 10 ft or so. Re-assembly of SteppIR Yagi might happen tomorrow although it may rain. We'll see.

Sunday June 11th    The ARRL June VHF Contest has come and gone and for a single op I did'nt do too shabby. 107 Q's in 31 grids on 3 bands for a score of around 4400.  My limitations were: I could use my 3 band quad (50/144/432) but I could not turn it. Rotator did not get installed. Luckily most of the openings were in the New England area as the tower was locked due East! Hopefully we'll everyting working by the September VHF Test.

Monday June 18th    I applied for and received Vanity Callsign K9DMW (my initials). I've had NT9E for over 20 years so thought it was time for a change. Besides I like the new phonetics: Kilo Nine Dead Man Walk'n. Kinda catchy, huh?

Saturday  July 22nd   Operated during the CQWW VHF Test. A friend came over, Bill N9RES, and we installed the rotator at the bottom of the tower finally but did not have to to run the cable up thru the shack floor in the garage. Did not spend a great deal of time operating the contest but had a good opening to New England on 6m. Remote line for V/UHF Remote switches have not been run up thru shack floor yet.

Saturday  August 4th    Operated sporadically during the ARRL UHF Test.  Ran control cables for the rotator and the V/UHF Remote switches to the shack. I can turn the antennas now but I am limited to 432 during this test but at least I am able to use the 8el tri-band quad on 432 now. Only about 12 Q's for the contest period. Still need to make a control box for the V/UHF Remote switches.

Sunday Aug 12   Re-assembeld the SteppIR and decided to put the passive 1st DIR 6m ele back on. I had taken it off at the other QTH because of the SWR  problems with using the 180 function on 6m. Removed all of the old fusing tape and checked the condition of the underlying electrical tape and it looked brand new. Put new silicone fusing tape on the element joints, tested the ant with the controller and found I had some wiring errors, corrected the wiring, tested it and put it aside on the lawn until I can get some friends over to help me attach it to the tower. Hopefully it will be up and working DX by Saturday afternoon.

Thursday August 16th   Jeff W9FMB was gracious enough to come down from his lofty Wisconsin QTH on his day off and meet after work at my house. We took down the Alpha/Delta DX-LB Plus dipole and we installed the SteppIR on the tower. By the time we were finished the mosquitos were out for blood, big time! Hopefully I will be able to run the SteppIR control cable up to the shack Friday night or Saturday morning. So close, yet so far. Wait till the neighbors see it it during morning drive time....

That's me at the base of the tower. Tower is in the nested position. The SteppIR is at 27ft. The fiberglass tubes are 36 feet long per element. You can see the passive 1st 6m Director. just in front of the Driven element. The copper tape elements were retracted all the way before installing on the tower so I am unable to use it until I run and connect the control cable to the shack.

Saturday August 25th 06:30 pm.  Was going to lower the tower on its side to check out the remote antenna switch. In my haste I forgot to install the locking bolt (locks the portion of the tower that connects to the rotator) so there would be no lateral movement of the tower while I lowered it. As I started to let out some cable with the winch, the tower was about 2-3 inches away from the tower raising fixture when it started to twist to the right as the weight moved to the right it got heavier and fell to the right toward the pine tree. As it reached the tree the twisting motion sheared off the top bolt holding the pulley for the winch. Luckily there was no damage to the antennas but I will have to replace the upper and lower masts.

Oh the humanity!

Sunday August 26th   8:30 am. I employed the service of a local tow truck operator to repair my dignity to its proper position.

The upper 12ft mast bent at the clamp due to the weight of the 3 band quad (19lbs). I managed to salvage most of it by sawing off about 18in of the lower portion. Removed the quad to be sold later.

Sat Sept. 22nd   I was gone for a few days this week and when I came back I found the mast had lowered in the tower and was pointing in the wrong direction. Lowered the tower fix the loose mast and to check out the remote antenna switch. Found that when I wired the switch I was 1 wire position off between the switch and the controller in the shack. I normally wire according to the resistor color code just to make things simple. I wired the switch using some old rotator cable. I used 1-Black, 2-Brown, 3-Red, 4-Org, 5-Yel, Gnd-White at the switch. However I screwed up when wiring in the shack. 1-Brown, 2-Red, 3-Org, 4-Yel, 5-Green, Gnd-Black. I know, I know....and I'm an Extra. When you're over 50 you are allowed senior moments...hi Spent rest of the time assembling the M2 18el 432 beam.

Sun Sept. 23rd   Spent the morning assembling the M2 2m 9el beam. Very good quality antennas. Biggest pain in the ass in assembling these antennas is measuring the elements and making sure you have equal lengths of the elements before putting the retainers on each side of the beam. The reason I took down the quad (19lbs) is that it was heavier by 6 lbs than these two beams together(11lbs) plus there was higher gain in the longer booms and extra elements on the M2 beams.

The assembled 432 beam is sitting in the ladder while the unassembled 2m beam is on the work bench.

The new beams in place. The 432 beam is at the top, and the 2m beam underneath about 3ft lower.
Ready for the Jan VHF Test! My next goal is to attach the upper tower cable so I can actually raise the tower

Next antenna up: 80M Skywire Loop

Dec 23rd 2007   Weather was exceptionally warm (in the 40's) so I took advantage and deployed the 80m Loop Skywire. 287' Loop is connected to a 4:1 balun (rated at 5kw) and at this time fed by some RG-58AU.  I will change the feed line when I connect it to the remote antenna switch up on the tower. Currently it is coming into the shack and hooked up to the LDG AT-1000Pro, ANT1 and then going to ANT1 port on the 756PROII. LDG provided a special cable that powers the tuner from the 756ProII. Because of this, a new Icon shoed up on my 756ProII view screen, When ANT1 is used it says (ext) underneath. It appears to the Icom that I am using the Icom AH-4  Remote Antenna Tuner.  ANT1The loop works fine for 80-30m but seems like there is not enough inductance (The AT-1000Pro can't find a match) to use it on 160. It could also be the the RG-58au that I'm using is too old so I hope the specs improve when I change over to RG-8X.

Jan 5th 2008   I joined a Dart League in August of  2007. We had the Playoff session today. My team took 3rd place.

That's me on the far left in the Harley shirt.

Jan 21 2008
Finished another Jan VHF test. Not many multipliers from this location resulted in a score of:

K9DMW IL SINGLE-OP LOW FIXED Badger Contesters Score: 1224

Feb 3rd 2008 Replaced the 4:1 Balun (on the 80m Loop) with a coaxial Center insulator (W2AU). I can tune anywhere on 80-30m but the  minimum  SWR on 160m is 6:1. Need to find another high power tuner with better range on 160m.

Feb 15 2008   Now that the Jan VHF Test is over I have applied to have my former call re-installed cuz I still like the shorter call even though I liked the phonetics for K9DMW (Kilo 9 Dead Man Walk'n).

Mar 5 2008   FCC cancelled K9DMW and Granted my application for my former call, NT9E. Found a mint condx Dentron MT-2000 in Western IL for a really good price. Should be here by next week.

Received my late Christmas gift last week. Ordered an MFJ-645 SO2R controller in Oct 2007 and find that they are not even in production yet in Feb 2008!. Cancelled my order with AES and ordered a DX Doubler from Top Ten Devices. (http://www.qth.com/topten/). Have not had the chance to hook it up yet.

Apr 13 2008    Re-arranged the shack with some custom shelves and incorporated the Ameritron 811H into the operating position.  Last month, I replaced the LDG AT-1000PRO with a Dentron MT-2000A. I can tune the 80m loop from 160-30m with no problem.

Now using the Heil PR 781 mic w/inline Heil pre-amp for the HF side. I need to make a switch box to switch the microkeyer between radios using the radio end of the cables. I tried using a data switch box but was getting a clicking noise on the V/UHF radio. When I ran the cable straight from the MK to the radio, no clicking noise so it must be an issue with the DB-37 cable (MK to switch box) or the switch box itself.

July 7 2008   Have not updated blog in a while. No major changes to the shack. I ordered a  W2IHY 8 Band EQ & Noise gate but have since sold it. In fact I am selling all of the Heil Audio acc. since I will be concentrating on V/UHF contesting. I now have an Elecraft 220 Transverter kit and hope to have it completed by next January's contest since at the current time I do not have a 220 Horiz. loop or a 220 yagi yet. I also need to find a 75-100w brick amp for 220. My goal will be to run transverters for 144/222/432 with the 756PROII. No need for SO2R boxes to muddy up the audio/control chain. I will be selling my 910H after the September Test to finance my transverter projects. I also bought the components needed for a Bluetooh interface (Search K7AGE bluetooth on youtube.com) to control the radios while putzing around the shop or yard. The Headset is a BlueParrot RoadWarrior B250 from VXI Corp. It has a range of about 60 ft or so and has a 10 hr battery capacity. The headset and the Jabra interface are both rechargeable and good for about 10 hrs. Plus, I can use the headset with my cell phone while driving. Sweet!

September 25th 2008   I have put my 910H up for sale on eHam.net. I will buy 2 more transverters (144/432) and 2 100-150W bricks,  a 50A P/S for the bricks, and a 222 Yagi and a 222 loop, 2 SSBE preamps for 144 and 432. I will have a lot of Fall/Winter kit building to do.....

October 15th 2008   The 910H has been sold and have ordered an received the 3 Elecraft transverter kits for 144, 222, and 432 Mhz. I still need to find a PAR (or M2) loop for 222 and an M2 Yagi for 222. I hope to build the kits and test the transverters  before the the Jan VHF Test. I have decided (for now) to dispense with purchasing the mast mounted SSB Electronics pre-amps. The 3 PA bricks I am hoping to purchase soon are TE Systems 1410G(160w), 2210G(130w), 4410G(100w). I am hoping I can get by with the built-in pre-amps each brick has. I am told the GaAsFET pre-amp has a very low noise floor and should do the trick for my plans.

Nov 2nd 2008   Found a 4 Pos Microwave Coaxial Switch on Ebay for $20 inc. shipping. The common and 4 coax ports are SMA Female conn. Now I need to find 5 SMA Male to BNC Female bulkhead cables. Switch will be used with switching the Transverters to the I.F. line on the 756PROII.
Problem with Tower: Old winch won't allow me to lower it to the ground. Found a new one at WW Grainger. Installed new winch but need new 3/16" SS cable for the winch. Project in progress.

Nov  8 2008   My buddy Erich came through and gave me some 3/16" SS cable rated at 3K lbs. Due to weather and time constraints I most likely won't be able to change out the cable till next spring.

Nov 22 2008  I have acquired 2 used TE Systems amps (a 1410G and a 4410G) for around $200 ea.   2 down 1 to go! I am looking forward to building the Elecraft transverters during my Christmas vacation. I also found a source for pre-made SMA cables in various connector and cable type configurations at Jameco Electronics.

The SM-1 is designed for use with the slim-line Heil Sound microphones, such as the PR 20. Its 5/8" threads mount onto the PL-2T "Topless" and other mounts, for easy installation.
